Packaging is everywhere. And it’s a big part of the world’s waste problem. Sustainable packaging is therefore another key component in reducing environmental pollution and encouraging responsible consumption. At hansgrohe, we have recognized this and launched an ambitious initiative: To have plastic-free packaging by the end of 2025.
We are proactive about reducing packaging waste and have set ourselves the aim of making all product packaging completely plastic-free by 2025. Green packaging is more than just a catchphrase – it’s our promise and part of our corporate philosophy. The “Green packaging by 2025” claim is ambitious, but it emphasizes our commitment to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly product packaging and implementing it step by step.
Unlike other packaging, sustainable packaging uses eco-friendly materials. For hansgrohe, the focus is on reducing plastic and introducing alternatives such as paper bubble wrap, paper bags, and cardboard sleeves. Not only are these materials eco-friendly, but they’re also recyclable.
Paper is an excellent material for recycling, as its fibers can be reused anywhere from ten to 25 times. The paper recycling system works really well in Europe, with an impressive recycling rate of 95.4 percent. As such, the paper and cardboard product packaging for the AXOR and hansgrohe brands will be made of up to 80 percent locally sourced recycled paper in future. We are also reducing the number of packaging options across our brands, which will help to optimize transport and warehouse logistics – yet another resource-efficient measure.
Any new process comes with challenges, including the conversion to sustainable packaging. This includes guaranteeing material availability, adapting production processes, and ensuring consumer acceptance. But these challenges also offer numerous opportunities:
Thanks to new packaging solutions, the Hansgrohe Group will save 310 tons of plastic per year in future. This is a major step when you consider the fact that sales packaging in Germany generates around 1.5 million tons of plastic waste every year. If plastic waste is incorrectly disposed of, it can often end up in the environment and the world’s oceans, where it breaks down into microplastics, forms garbage patches, and ultimately worms its way into our food chain. Researchers are not yet sure of the impacts of this, but one thing is for certain: Plastic also often contains additives such as plasticizers and flame retardants that harm sea creatures and can also get into the human food chain.
A key aspect of the Green Packaging Initiative is sustainable production and supply chain optimization. By using recyclable and biodegradable materials, we actively contribute to reducing our ecological footprint. However, the entire production process should also be made sustainable.
Optimizing the supply chain plays a key role here. We collaborate closely with our suppliers and partners to ensure the materials used are not only sustainable but also made in fair and eco-friendly conditions.
To implement the Green Packaging Vision at hansgrohe, we rely on strong partnerships with leading suppliers. These partnerships enable us to achieve our own sustainability goals and have a positive impact on the entire industry.
The development of innovative packaging solutions is at the heart of our Green Packaging Initiative. We are constantly looking for new ways to make packaging more sustainable and functional. To achieve this, we use creative design approaches for our packaging to ensure our products are protected and waste is reduced. One example of these innovations is the use of modular packaging systems that can be flexibly adjusted to different product sizes. This minimizes material consumption and makes it easier to reuse and recycle the packaging.
At hansgrohe, we believe our customers play a key role in implementing green packaging. By opting for sustainable products and correctly disposing of packaging materials, our customers can make a major contribution to protecting the environment. To increase awareness of sustainable packaging, we regularly provide our customers with information about the benefits of green packaging in our magazine and on our website. Let’s make the future greener together!
Another key aspect of our sustainability efforts is our comprehensive climate protection strategy, which plays an important role in our work here. Green packaging is just one of the many elements of this strategy. But what exactly is behind this term and why is it so relevant now? To understand the role of this strategy in sustainable corporate and product development, we need to dive deeper into the importance and underlying principles of Hansgrohe’s climate change strategies.
The Green Packaging Initiative demonstrates our willingness and our absolute commitment to sustainability and the protecting the environment. We believe converting to plastic-free packaging by 2025 is a fundamental step toward a greener and more sustainable future. Want to learn more?
