Checklist for the bathroom with sauna

Consider the following checklist before purchasing.

  1. Plan enough space
For new constructions or renovations, it's best to think about the space a bathroom needs from the very beginning of the planning process. One square meter per person will guarantee enough room. The smallest models require just over one square meter. If possible, plan generously. The distance to the wall should be at least 5 cm for interior walls, and at least 10 cm for exterior walls.

A sauna can quickly become a main attraction for family and friends. In addition to the actual space required, we advise planning enough room to move around, at least two additional square meters for a small model.

  2. Oven power
The size of the oven depends on the number of square meters in the sauna. For an area of up to six square meters, a unit with 4.5 kW power is sufficient. For up to nine square meters, an oven should provide 6.0 kW of power, and for up to 11 square meters, 8.0 kW. 9.0 kW of power is sufficient to heat a sauna up to 12 square meters.

  3. Type of sauna oven
An electric oven is a good choice for an indoor sauna. A gas oven would need a suitable pipe. Wood or bio materials as fuel require stoking and need a connection to a fireplace.

  4. Required connections
A sauna oven requires a power connection. You also need nearby connections for water to set up a shower to cool down. However, this is usually already planned for.

  5. Ventilation
When choosing a model, make sure that a draft-proof ventilation system is installed. The interior itself is steam-insulated, but the condensation water can cause damage in your bathroom. The necessary ventilation can be done either through large windows or a separate system.

  6. Control
Want to retreat to your sauna right after getting home? Intelligently networked oven controls make it possible. Simply set the desired temperature and time with your smartphone.

  7. Furniture
Between individual courses, you should get to relax in peace. That requires suitable furniture. Recliners that can handle moisture are ideal.

  8. Visual design
Cohesive design of the entire bathroom magnifies the wellness effect. A sauna brings wood into play. Wood grain can be combined in many ways and looks especially good with natural stone. Light-colored tiles and smart lights let you adjust the color exactly to your current needs.

  9. Don’t forget safety
There are three different labels. The Verband der Elektrotechnik (Association of Electrical Engineering) awards the VDE mark, a seal of quality for the control system and oven. The Gütegemeinschaft Saunabau und Dampfbad e.V. (Quality Association for Sauna Construction and Steam Baths) awards the RAL seal, which guarantees high quality. The Blue Angel, the German government’s environmental label, provides information about environmental compatibility and safety.
