“Wasser im Netz” forges links with the digital world

Hansgrohe ideas competition focusing on smart data and water, with creative solutions

What does the data stream have to do with water, showers and bathroom culture? Hansgrohe launched its “Wasser im Netz” ideas competition: the mixer and sanitation specialist was looking for new approaches and innovations linking the internet with the experience of water. Students, start-ups, companies and enthusiasts focussed on the question: How can big data and global networking be used to achieve more water-related customer benefits and sustainability?

“Wasser im Netz”: in the ideas competition, first launched in 2016, Hansgrohe was particularly looking for:

  • revolutionary solutions for using water in homes and companies
  • new ways of using water in marketing and communication
  • innovations in customer benefits, resource conservation and applications

The best ideas for 2016 were awarded a total 17,000 euros, and the awards were presented at the Hansgrohe Water Symposium in Schiltach.

  • 1st prize, with prize money of 10,000 euros, went to the founders of PHE (Pipe Hydro Energy), Mulundu Sichone, Felix Müller and Leif-Hagen Ulrich (all from Hamburg, Germany). Their innovative pressure compensation turbine improves energy efficiency in homes and buildings
  • 2nd prize of 5,000 euros went to Christof Elben (Oberndorf, Germany): His idea makes use of increased networking in the home to create a “smart“ bathroom mirror
  • 3rd prize, and prize money of 2,000 euros, went to Robbie Hillis from Ark Labs (Florence, USA). His monitoring device, which is equipped with adaptive software, issues an alert in the event of a leak. “The Ark“ can also be used to remotely shut off the water inlet via a smartphone app
