In December 2008, the “Celebrity Solstice”, the first of five post-Panamax ships owned by Celebrity Cruises, set out on her maiden voyage to the Caribbean. The name “Solstice” is inspired by the English summer solstice. Building work on the 317-metre long luxury liner with a width of almost 37 metres began in March 2007. The floating 5-star hotel with 122,000 GRT (gross registered tonnage) has 1,426 passenger cabins and 90 per cent are external cabins. The crew of 1,271 takes care of passengers’ well-being – with full capacity for up to 2,852 passengers.
